Across the country, the over-usage of natural resources – metals, minerals, forests and fossil fuels – is accelerating quickly, as a consequence we have acute environmental damage and social afflictions, mainly to local communities, especially rural ones. In addition, bad governance and corruption mean that income from extraction disproportionately benefit large corporations and often completely bypass communities of origin. Local communities with ensured rights to their land are the best protectors of the natural environment.
